They can be tricky to remove, but without them, you wouldn't be able to trap water in the sink for various tasks from washing dishes to cleaning makeup brushes.Sink Drain Plug is the system in your sink that pops up and down to hold water in the sink. All you have to do in order to operate it is pull the handle behind your faucet up and down. This is a fairly simple process, but it is important to know exactly how it works in case it isn't doing its job properly.

Types of Sink Drain Plug
Traditional sink stoppers
Traditional sink stoppers work by creating suction and pressure. You take the rubber sink stopper, which is slightly larger in diameter than the hole, and then push it into the hole. They are designed with a curvature, so you cannot push them all the way down into the pipe.
Since they are made of rubber, and the diameter is more significant than the hole, the rubber causes suction and pressure to secure the sink stopper. The stopper will have a small handle designed on the top or a ball and chain connected to it. This helps remove the plug with relative ease, even though you might feel pressure to remove the stopper.
Pop-up sink stoppers
Modern-day sink stoppers, designed with the handle connected to the faucet, work with a pop-up mechanism. If your sink stopper is not opening and closing, the fault usually lies with the pop-up tool. The entire mechanism for the stopper to work comprised a few components. We need to know what they are and their function to understand how sink stoppers work.
Material of sink drain plug
Sink drain plugs can also be made from different materials. Some of the most common materials include chrome, stainless steel, and brass. Chrome and stainless steel stoppers are a good choice for those who want a sleek, modern look in their bathroom, while brass stoppers are a good choice for those who want a more traditional look.
There are several factors to consider when choosing the right sink drain stopper for your bathroom. One of the most important factors is the size and style of the sink. Be sure to choose a stopper that is compatible with the size and style of your sink to ensure a proper fit. Another important factor to consider is the overall style and design of the bathroom. Choose a stopper that complements the overall look and feel of your bathroom for a cohesive and elegant look.

Lift rod:The lift rod is the handle on which you pull to activate the mechanism
Clevis screw:The clevis screw secures the clevis strap to the lift rod
Clevis strap:The clevis strap connects the lift rod to the pivot rod
Spring clip:The spring clip connects the clevis strap to the pivot rod
Pivot rod:The pivot rod is the rod that pushes the stopper up and down
Seal:The seal efficiently covers the hole that the pivot rod goes through into the drainage pipe
Stopper:The stopper is the object that seals the hole of the container.
How to Choose Sink Drain Plug
There is no universal drain hole diameter that applies to every bathroom sink, but 1 1/2 inches is the most common size for a bathroom sink drain opening, according to Signature Hardware. Some bathroom sinks have a slightly narrower opening at 1 1/4 inches, while others are a bit wider at 1 5/8 inches.
If you still have the literature that came with the sink or drain assembly, it should list the drain opening size and size of the stopper. Otherwise, just measure across the center of the opening with a tape measure. If there is a stopper in the sink already, measure the top of it or remove the stopper and take it to a local hardware store. For a pop-up bathroom sink stopper, which uses a lever to lift or raise the stopper, measure both the head and the length of the entire stopper, as well as take note of its construction.
Kitchen sink drain openings are usually a standard 3 1/2 inches across, although in rare cases, they may be 4 inches wide. A plug with a built-in strainer is a common option, allowing water to flow through when desired. This is also a great choice to help keep debris from entering the drain. Stores also sell the replacement stoppers that go over garbage disposal openings.
A universal sink plug is designed to fit multiple drain-hole sizes. These are often suction-style covers, placed over the drain opening and pressed down to keep water in the sink basin. Even with "universal" in the name, not all of these plugs are the same size. For the most bang for the buck, look for one wider than the widest drain opening in your home. This way, it can fit virtually any sink or even the bathtub. Some of these are up to 5 inches across and also come in handy for frequent travels.
How Do You Remove a Pop-Up Sink Drain Plug?
Locate and adjust the lift rod and clevis strap under the sink
First, find the lift rod and clevis strap underneath the bathroom or kitchen sink. If you have a cramped base cabinet, clean it out and set stored objects aside before attempting to access the drain assembly.
Unscrew and detach the pivot rod from the drain pipe
Next, you'll need to unscrew the pivot rod from the drain pipe. When you remove the pivot rod, the sink stopper will drop into the drain, becoming flush with the sink and making it difficult to lift it out. Hold the stopper with one hand or place something underneath the lip to prevent it from sliding down when you remove the pivot rod.
Pull out the sink stopper from the drain opening
After you remove the pivot rod from the drain pipe, the sink stopper can move freely in the drain. Lift it out of the drain opening by pulling up on the stopper. It should come out without resistance unless there's a clog, as the pivot rod is what fixes it in place. If your drain is clogged or drains slowly, you can use a drain snake to remove any debris stuck in the pipe before you reinstall the sink stopper.
Clean and reinstall the sink stopper if needed
While you have the assembly out, clean any hair, gunk, or grime off the end of the pivot rod. Wash the stopper with cleaner and a scrub brush, ensuring you remove all gunk and debris. Examine each component for signs of damage or wear, replacing each part as necessary. When you're done, reassemble the sink stopper if necessary. To reinstall the stopper, fit the stopper back into the drain. Insert the pivot rod into the drain pipe and feed it through the hole at the bottom of the stopper.
Determine what type of sink stopper you have
The first step of cleaning and repairing your sink stopper is to determine whether you have a traditional sink stopper assembly with a pivot rod, extension bar, and lift rod to operate the stopper, or if you have a universal pop-up stopper with an internal spring mechanism.Full sink stopper assemblies are easy to spot because they have a lift rod, which is typically located behind the faucet or between the hot and cold handles. You can pull up on the rod to close the sink stopper. If you take a look under the sink, you'll spot the pivot rod extending out from the drain line to the extension bar, which attaches to the pivot rod.
Take apart the existing bathroom sink stopper assembly
If you have a universal bathroom sink stopper, simply open the existing stopper and pull up to remove it from the drain. The stopper should slide out relatively easier without tools, but if it seems stuck, try using channel lock pliers to get a better grip. Do not wrench the stopper out of the drain, as too much force can damage the sink. Gradually work the stopper loose by wiggling it back and forth as you continue to pull up on the stopper until it comes free of the drain.
Thoroughly clean and inspect the parts
Stoppers can create sink clogs if they are not regularly cleaned due to the buildup of debris. Often, if you are having problems with your sink draining slowly or the stopper not sealing properly, the issue can be resolved by cleaning the parts. Use a soft-bristle brush with a mild cleaning solution or even vinegar to thoroughly clean the various parts of the sink stopper assembly. When the parts are cleaned, you can inspect them for any signs of significant wear or damage.
Replace broken or severely damaged parts
During your inspection, you may find parts that are severely damaged or broken entirely, but this doesn't mean that you will need to replace the entire assembly. Head to your local home improvement store or search online for replacement parts that are compatible with your existing sink stopper system. You could also purchase an entirely new sink stopper assembly, or take this opportunity to switch to an easy-to-maintain universal pop-up stopper with an internal spring mechanism. Regardless of your choice, be sure to check the product information before purchase to ensure that the sink stopper you choose is compatible with your sink.
Reassemble the bathroom sink stopper
After cleaning the existing parts or sourcing new parts, you can start to reassemble the bathroom sink stopper. Roll out a ring of plumber's putty and place it around the drain opening, then slide the drain down through the drain hole and secure the locknut with a set of channel lock pliers. Some of the putty will be forced out around the top lip of the drain, so just wipe away any excess putty with a damp rag.
Test for leaks and functionality
Run the water and check the drain line for leaks coming from the P-trap, stopper drain pipe, drain, or pivot nut. Also, take the opportunity to close the sink stopper and fill the sink with water to test whether the stopper has a strong seal that can prevent the water from flowing into the drain. When you are satisfied that the system is not leaking, you should also test the flow of water with the stopper open. Run water into the sink with the stopper in the open position to see how quickly the water drains out of the sink. If the water seems to be draining slowly, the pivot rod may need to be adjusted to allow the stopper to open further.
